ATM Security

We at Florida Commerce take the safety of your accounts, you and your family very seriously. Here are some important steps you can take to make your ATM transactions more secure:

Card Security:

  • Your debit card is like cash. At all times keep your card in a safe and secure place.
  • Keep your PIN number a secret. Your debit card will only work with your PIN (personal identification number). Memorize your PIN and never write it on your card or store it with your card. Never tell anyone your PIN number or let someone enter it into a machine. Never give it to anyone over the phone.
  • Report a lost or stolen card at once. Even if you think that no one has your PIN, the safety of your funds is most important so promptly report your card lost or stolen and another will be issued immediately.
  • Online banking provides a way for your to check your receipts daily to guard against ATM fraud. Verify each transaction and report items you are not able to balance with your receipts.

If you or your family members use ATM cash machines on a normal basis, here are some tips that can make the practice a little safer

  • Only use ATM machines in a well-lighted, open, high-traffic area.
  • 60% of all ATM robberies occur between 7pm and 4am so take someone with you during these hours and stick to drive up facilities if at all possible.
  • Keep your doors locked and the car in gear, with your foot firmly on the brake, while using the ATM machine.
  • If alone at night, use ATMs inside busy supermarkets, department stores, etc., when possible.
  • If lights around the ATM are not working, don't use that machine.
  • Avoid ATM machines bordering obvious hiding places – i.e. thick shrubs, behind columns or away from public view.
  • When you approach an ATM, scan the area first for loiterers or other suspicious people. If you see someone standing around or sitting in a car...leave immediately.
  • Have your card ready, your PIN memorized and leave quickly, not counting your cash in public.
  • ALWAYS be sure your transaction screen has closed out and is ready for the next customer before you walk away from the machine.
  • Beware of offers or requests for help from strangers during an ATM transaction.
  • If confronted by a robber, don't fight with or attempt to follow them. Give up your money without argument.
  • Drive or walk to a safe place and immediately call the police
